Twyla’s Healthy Eating Tips
«Back to Healthy Weight Loss

I learned about weight loss the hard way, by losing 65 pounds myself. Here are my top tips for losing weight and eating healthy.

Eat Breakfast! Studies show you’ll consume fewer calories throughout the day if you do. Not to mention that you’ll burn more calories because your metabolic system will be off and running first thing in the morning.

Stock Food Where You Work. Just in case. Keep a stash of healthy breakfast bars for those days when you’ve had to run out of the house without breakfast.

Drink Water. We need about 2 litres a day, more when active. We often eat when we are thirsty. Use a water bottle to help you measure intake, to ensure you’re getting enough.

Reduce Fat. Especially saturated and trans fats. Use salsa instead of mayo. Try lite salad dressings and sour creams. Try Bits & Bites instead of potato chips.

Increase Good Fats. These include most vegetable oils, such as canola and olive oil. Increase your intake of the essential omega-3 oils found in fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel, as well as flax and hemp seeds and oils.

Eat Snacks. Make them a healthy part of your day, in between breakfast & lunch and lunch & supper. Try fruits and veg, yogurt, applesauce, crackers, and milk.

Craving Tip: You want chocolate? First drink a glass of water, then have a healthy snack, such as an apple or low fat yogurt, THEN satisfy that craving for chocolate with a smaller amount. Savour it.

Realize That Food is Comfort. It’s hard to break some of our habits for unhealthy foods. Keep at it, but go slowly, one step at a time.

Increase Fibre Intake. Fibre increases your feelings of satiety and is helpful for keeping your blood glucose stable, as well as promoting healthy intestines. Fibre rich foods: Whole wheat and rye breads. Add high fibre cereals to yogurts, puddings, and apple sauces. Eat beans, the forgotten fibre! And of course,

Eat More Fruit and Vegetables. These are an easy and effective way to increase the fibre in your diet and add vitamins and minerals.

Don’t Diet! Dieting leaves the body with the belief it is starving. The body will then slow metabolism and conserve fat instead of burning it. Binge eating may also result.

Keep Active. Activity helps reduce feelings of hunger during and shortly after activity, as well as burning off calories.
