Summertime Gadgets

Now that summer really is here, the air conditioner’s been on to prove it, there’re a few gadgets, widgets, and doodads that might just make your life a lot easier.

Butane Powered Mosquito Repellant. I’ve been asking everyone I know who has one of these what they think of it and how well it works. I’ve had many rave reviews for this nifty little gadget and a couple of so so reviews. The rave reviewers say these devices will keep mosquitoes away about 15 feet, the so so say 5 feet. Wind is a factor. These work great in no wind situations but not windy. Fire them up 10 to 30 minutes ahead of time for best effect.

Crocs. I never did purchase any of the original brightly coloured Crocs shoes because I’m just not a bright-colour-wearing kind of person. Thankfully, Crocs has come out with a number of sporty sandals in darker colours. Which means I’m now also a Croc convert. I absolutely adore my black Cleo Croc sandals. Take them off you say? No way.

Fruit Fly Jar. The fruit flies aren’t quite out yet, but it never hurts to be prepared. Pick up one of these beautiful wasp jars then fill the trough with a mix of apple cider vinegar, water, and a drop of dish soap. You can also add small bits of ripened fruit to increase the bait’s drawing powers. Hang the jar in an appropriate place in your kitchen and let it do its work. Empty, clean, and refill periodically.

Silicone Ice Cube Trays. Forget about trying to get ice out of rigid trays without breaking the trays. Try the new flexible ice cube trays made of silicone. It’s super easy to pop out your cubes without the brain freeze.

Kuchofuku Air Conditioned Bed. Here’s one for those of you who suffer dreadfully in the heat, though it should be called a fan bed instead of air-conditioned. Some product info: ‘Using extremely quiet dual-fans at the foot of the bed, cool air is pulled in from behind your head and circulated through the soft membrane which also acts as an air-cushion to support you.’ Find out more. Not sure how it works, but it sounds interesting anyway.

Therapik. I’ve mentioned this one before, but during our summer of voracious bugs, this one’s great if you happen to welt and itch when you’ve been bitten. All you do is place the heating area over the bite, press the button, then let the gadget do its work for the recommended time. Neutralizes mosquito, black fly, bee, hornet, tick, and flea bites. Internet reviewers note it also works with deer and horse fly bites. Available from Lee Valley Tools.

Gardener’s Clay Soap. This isn’t your regular bar of soap. Made with baked clay, so it’s pumice-like in texture, this soap suds and cleans spectacularly. Works great with garden dirt, bicycle grease, ink, and most anything you can throw at it. Available from Lee Valley Tools.

The World’s Kindest Nail Brush. These surgical scrubs are the cat’s meow for getting into all the crevasses around your nails and knuckles. They also make excellent fruit and vegetable brushes. Available from Lee Valley Tools.

Cooling Bandana. This bandana contains special crystals that expand to hold water at 250 times their dry size. How it works: ‘Tie it around your neck and it will cool you down by cooling the blood flow to your head. Leaving it on will keep your neck moist and evaporation will continue to cool you all day long.’ Available from Lee Valley Tools.

Wireless Cooking Thermometers. Helps you check the doneness of those choice bits of meat on the barbecue without fuss. Takes the guesswork out. Now you’ll know for sure if your steaks are raw or well done before you shut off the barbee.

Summertime gadgets are a lot of fun and they can make life easier, cooler, and less itchy.
